Starting January 1, 2025, single-use plastic items like stirrers, cups, Styrofoam food containers, table covers, and straws will no longer be allowed in Dubai.

The ban will go even further on January 1, 2026, targeting plastic plates, food containers, tableware, and lids for cups.

These steps are part of Dubai’s wider plan to cut down on plastic waste, protect the environment, and promote sustainable practices across the emirate.

Exemptions include thin plastic bags for packing food items like vegetables and meat, as well as export-related products.

What does this mean for you?

For residents, this means noticeable changes in packaging for takeaways and deliveries. Expect to see paper straws, cardboard containers, and other eco-friendly alternatives replacing plastics.

Businesses, on the other hand, have been given time to adapt to the new rules and switch to sustainable materials.
