The reopening of the Iraqi Consulate in Karachi after 23 years is expected to boost trade, investment and tourism between Iraq and Pakistan, Iraq’s top diplomat in the city said Wednesday.
Consul General Maher Mjhid Jejan, speaking at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), pledged to strengthen economic ties and assist Pakistani businesses interested in exploring opportunities in Iraq.
"The Iraqi Consulate is available 24/7 to facilitate the business community," Jejan said. "Our doors are always open."
He emphasized that Iraq is undergoing rapid development and urged Pakistani investors to visit, dismissing security concerns as outdated. "People can travel freely across Iraq now," he said.
Jejan announced that business document attestation services have begun at the consulate, with visa operations expected to start within a month once a dedicated team arrives from Iraq. Meanwhile, visas are being processed through the Iraqi Embassy in Islamabad. An e-visa system is also available for easier online applications.
The consul general proposed a sea-link between Basra and Karachi to enhance trade logistics and suggested forming a joint working group with KCCI to identify new economic opportunities.
Senior Vice President of KCCI, Zia ul Arfeen, noted that Pakistan’s exports to Iraq totaled $54.29 million in the 2024 fiscal year, while imports reached $145.46 million — figures he called "far below potential."
Arfeen urged simplified customs procedures and highlighted sectors like agriculture, textiles, IT and energy for expanded cooperation. He also suggested Iraqi investment in Pakistan’s Special Economic Zones under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and an oil pipeline linking Basra to Gwadar.
Both sides expressed optimism that the consulate’s reopening would deepen bilateral relations through increased trade, investment and cultural exchanges.
The meeting was attended by KCCI leaders, including Vice President Faisal Khalil Ahmed and former President Majyd Aziz.
