Along Pakistan’s southern coast, a rare breed of camel has adapted to a life between land and sea. Known as Kharai camels, they can swim through coastal waters and spend months on mangrove-covered islands in the Indus Delta.
Feeding on mangrove leaves and other coastal vegetation, the camels are remarkably well adapted to the region’s harsh, salty environment. For generations, they were also used by coastal communities to transport goods across the delta.
Today, the Kharai camel remains a remarkable symbol of how animals and communities have adapted to life along Sindh’s changing coastline.
