President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif discussed the country’s political and security situation, including law and order in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on Saturday.

The federal government is preparing for parliamentary sessions and further political consultations.

What did the president and prime minister agree on?

The two leaders agreed to convene separate sessions of the National Assembly and Senate on Tuesday, October 13. The meeting at the president’s official residence lasted more than half an hour, according to sources. Prime Minister Shehbaz departed from Aiwan-e-Sadr after the meeting.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, Law and Justice Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Federal Minister Ahad Cheema assisted the prime minister. Senators Sherry Rehman, Syed Naveed Qamar and Saleem Mandviwalla, along with Dr Asim, assisted the president.

What happens next after the Zardari and Shehbaz meeting?

Separately, Shehbaz has called a federal cabinet meeting for Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at the Prime Minister’s House. The cabinet is expected to consider and approve key decisions, sources said, without providing further details.

Earlier on Saturday, the prime minister spoke by telephone with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and congratulated him on performing Umrah, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. Shehbaz invited Fazlur Rehman to meet at the Prime Minister’s House. The JUI-F leader accepted the invitation, and the meeting is expected to take place soon, the statement said.

During the call, Fazlur Rehman also discussed steps to ease tensions between the federal government and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government. The contacts come amid efforts to address political differences and reduce tensions, as the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf continues its march towards Islamabad.
