Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has carried out the UAE’s first implant of a Coronary Sinus Reducer (CSR), a device designed to ease the debilitating chest pain experienced by patients with refractory angina, WAM reported.

Refractory angina affects people with coronary artery disease who continue to suffer persistent chest pain even after standard treatments such as medication, angioplasty with stent placement (PCI), or coronary bypass surgery (CABG). Although not always immediately life-threatening, the condition severely limits daily activity and remains difficult to manage.

Dr. Georges-Pascal Haber, Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said the breakthrough highlights the capital’s growing role in advanced heart care, noting that the hospital is “pushing the boundaries of modern medicine” through cutting-edge procedures and global expertise.

According to Dr. Ronney Shantouf of the Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute, the CSR device provides a minimally invasive, clinically tested option that can ease symptoms over time.

“This procedure gives patients a safe and effective pathway to reduced chest pain and a better quality of life,” he said, adding that improvements typically appear gradually in the weeks following implantation.
