UAE expands satellite network with three new Earth observation spacecraft

The UAE has activated three new Earth observation satellites, expanding its space-based intelligence capabilities and advancing the country's ambitions in the global space economy.

Space42, an Abu Dhabi-based space and artificial intelligence company, announced Tuesday that Foresight-3, Foresight-4 and Foresight-5 are now fully operational, bringing its Synthetic Aperture Radar constellation to five satellites.

What does the UAE's expanded SAR constellation do?

The five-satellite Foresight constellation provides high-resolution geospatial intelligence to governments, businesses and strategic partners worldwide. SAR technology can capture imagery through cloud cover, adverse weather and complete darkness, making it more versatile than optical satellites.

The expansion improves revisit rates and enables consistent data collection across key regions.

How were the new satellites built and tested?

The three satellites were launched in November 2025 and completed commissioning and testing before being declared operational. They were developed in partnership with ICEYE, a Finnish radar satellite company, as part of a broader effort to build local expertise and facilitate technology transfer to the UAE.

Critical integration and testing activities were conducted at Space42's Assembly, Integration and Testing facility in Abu Dhabi, making these among the first advanced SAR satellites to undergo that process inside the country.

Hasan Al Hosani, chief executive officer of Smart Solutions at Space42, said the expanded constellation would enhance the UAE's sovereign Earth observation capabilities. He added that the ICEYE collaboration had strengthened national capability to a level that competes across global markets.

What regions do the Foresight satellites cover?

The satellites operate in mid-inclined Low Earth Orbit and extend monitoring capabilities across regions where more than 90 percent of the world's population lives. They feed imagery into Space42's AI-powered geospatial intelligence platform, GIQ, which the company says can transform raw satellite data into actionable intelligence within minutes. The satellites can capture imagery at a resolution of up to 25 centimeters.

Space42 said its AI-driven analytics platform can reduce emergency response times by as much as 90 percent, lower predictive maintenance costs by up to 30 percent and cut operational inefficiencies by around 25 percent.

These capabilities make the constellation particularly valuable for disaster response, infrastructure monitoring and security applications.

How does this fit into the UAE's space strategy?

The announcement reflects rapidly growing global demand for Earth observation services. Industry projections suggest Earth observation insights could generate more than $700 billion in economic value globally by 2030, while contributing to emissions reduction efforts across multiple sectors.

The expansion also positions the UAE among the top 20 nations operating SAR space assets.

The UAE has identified the space sector as a strategic growth industry under its National Space Strategy 2030, with investments focused on sovereign infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and artificial intelligence.

The Foresight constellation expansion represents a significant milestone in that effort, combining locally integrated space assets with AI-powered analytics.
