5.1 magnitude earthquake jolts Pakistan’s Punjab, no casualties reported
The quake's epicenter was identified near Kharian, with a depth of 15 kilometers
An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Pakistan’s Punjab province on Thursday morning, with tremors felt across Lahore and other regions, officials said.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the quake's epicenter was identified near Kharian, with a depth of 15 kilometers.
“Thankfully, no casualties or property damage have been reported from any district so far,” a PDMA spokesperson said.
The quake briefly triggered panic among residents, prompting many to rush out of buildings as tremors were felt. However, calm has largely returned, as significant damage appears unlikely.
PDMA Director General confirmed that district administrations across Punjab are inspecting buildings for structural safety. "Our teams remain on the ground to ensure public safety and assess any potential risks," he said.
To prepare for possible aftershocks, emergency machinery and response teams have been placed on high alert. The PDMA’s central control room and district emergency operation centers are operating 24/7 to monitor the situation and respond promptly to any incidents.
Residents have been urged to report any damages or concerns to the PDMA helpline at 1129. Officials emphasized the importance of vigilance as aftershocks are possible in the coming hours.
