Abu Dhabi records 4.8 million hotel visitors in 2024
Also welcomed more than 3.9 million visitors across cultural events and landmarks YTD October
Abu Dhabi has welcomed 4.8 million hotel guests as of October 2024, marking a 26% increase in international visitors compared to last year, according to the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT).
The growth in tourism has been matched by a surge in cultural engagement, with over 3.9 million visits to the emirate’s cultural sites and events – a 21% rise compared to 2023, WAM reported. Officials attribute the success to Abu Dhabi's Tourism Strategy 2030, which aims to position the emirate as a global leader in tourism and culture.
Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Under-Secretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, said the results reflect the emirate’s commitment to sustainable growth. “Our journey so far has been transformational as we continue to share Abu Dhabi with the world,” he said. “Through authentic experiences, infrastructure development, and strategic partnerships, we are shaping Abu Dhabi into a thriving destination.”
From January to October 2024, Abu Dhabi exceeded pre-pandemic tourism figures, attracting visitors from key markets including India, China, Russia, the UK, and Saudi Arabia. The emirate’s Tourism Strategy 2030 outlines ambitious goals, including welcoming 39.3 million visitors annually, creating 178,000 new jobs, and contributing AED 90 billion to GDP by the end of the decade.
To achieve these targets, the strategy focuses on four pillars: city activation, promotion and marketing, infrastructure development, and streamlined visa and licensing processes.
Aviation growth
The emirate’s aviation sector continues to play a critical role in supporting tourism. Zayed International Airport is now serviced by 24 airlines, with Etihad Airways launching 10 new routes in 2024.
Budget carriers like Wizz Air Abu Dhabi and Air Arabia have expanded operations, connecting travellers to dozens of destinations worldwide.
Upcoming attractions
Several high-profile projects are set to further boost Abu Dhabi’s appeal. These include the addition of a Harry Potter-themed attraction at Warner Bros. World, the development of Hudayriyat Island as a hub for sports and adventure, and the expansion of the Saadiyat Cultural District, which will include new museums and cultural landmarks.
