Hybrid and electric vehicles now account for about 99% of Abu Dhabi’s taxi fleet, which comprises more than 6,147 vehicles, as the emirate accelerates efforts to reduce transport emissions and achieve climate neutrality by 2050, Gulf News reported.

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), also known as Abu Dhabi Mobility, said the transition covers standard, family, airport and taxis for People of Determination.

The shift follows regulatory measures, incentives and partnerships with private operators to replace conventional petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles with hybrid and fully electric models.

How is Abu Dhabi transforming its taxi fleet?

The ITC said the transition was driven by long-term planning and cooperation between the public and private sectors. Taxi franchise operators, including Tawasul, have signed agreements with vehicle manufacturers to introduce hybrid and electric models suited to local operating conditions.

The initiative forms part of a wider sustainable transport strategy that includes expanding clean energy use, developing shared-mobility services and strengthening supporting infrastructure.

What are the benefits of hybrid and electric taxis?

The transition is expected to reduce fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and noise pollution across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Al Dhafra Region.

Hybrid and electric vehicles also offer quieter rides, while regenerative braking systems recover energy during deceleration. The ITC says the shift could help lower operating and maintenance costs over the longer term.

Passengers have reported quieter and smoother journeys, while drivers have highlighted improved driving comfort and additional safety features in newer vehicles.

How many people use Abu Dhabi taxis?

Abu Dhabi's taxi services recorded more than 60 million passenger journeys in 2025, with smart bookings accounting for 18% of total reservations.

Electronic payments exceeded 38.53 million transactions during the year, reflecting the growing use of digital services across the sector.

Passengers can book taxis through the Abu Dhabi Taxi app and other approved platforms, with payment options including card terminals, QR codes and digital methods.

The emirate operates Abu Dhabi Taxi and Zayed International Airport Taxi services, connecting passengers to destinations across the region.

How does the initiative fit into Abu Dhabi's wider transport plans?

The taxi fleet transition is part of Abu Dhabi's broader push towards cleaner and smarter mobility. The emirate is also developing autonomous transport services and working with local and international companies on self-driving technology.

Digital booking applications, GPS-based fleet management and electronic payments are also being expanded to improve passenger convenience and operational efficiency.
