Parliament speaker and top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran needs to reduce petrol consumption because a US naval blockade is limiting fuel imports the country needs to meet demand.
He made the appeal during a televised address on Tuesday.
Ghalibaf acknowledged that consumers are not solely responsible for the high demand. "Of course, part of the responsibility for this high consumption does not lie with our people, it lies with our industry," he said.
"But in any case, what is clear is that we need to save gasoline in our consumption."
