JioHotstar domain now has a new owner — and it’s not Reliance
JioHotstar.com unveils a new mission with a philanthropic twist.
The JioHotstar domain saga has shaken things up yet again, shifting from a tech entrepreneur's ambitious dreams to a heartwarming story of young philanthropy.
Initially, a Delhi-based app developer sought ₹1 crore from Reliance Industries for the domain, hoping to fund his executive MBA at Cambridge University. However, after going quiet and facing mounting legal pressures, he has disappeared from the scene altogether.
What exactly happened?
The JioHotstar domain previously displayed a landing page with a message from the developer, explaining how he had acquired the domain upon hearing about the anticipated Jio and Hotstar merger. His message stated:
When I saw this domain become available, I felt everything might align perfectly. My goal in purchasing it was simple: if the merger goes through, it could help me achieve my dream of studying at Cambridge
The developer also revealed that Ambujesh Yadav, Assistant Vice-President of Commercials at Reliance, had reached out to discuss the domain. He asked for £93,345 (his estimated tuition cost), but Reliance declined and subsequently mentioned pursuing legal action over the domain name.

What’s next?
As the anticipated merger between JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar looms, the relevance of the JioHotstar domain could shift yet again, raising questions about how Reliance might respond to this new philanthropic direction.
In the high-stakes streaming landscape, this story has now become more than just a tech transaction—it’s a testament to the unexpected ways goodwill and ambition can intersect.
