Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan has filed a reference with the Election Commission against 26 opposition members, accusing them of violating the sanctity of the house and seeking their disqualification. He warned that anyone who disrupts the Assembly will face consequences, stating, “I’ve been patient for over a year, but I must uphold the Speaker’s role.”
The move follows a chaotic June 27 session where opposition members disrupted Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s speech, leading to scuffles. Under Rule 210(3), the Speaker suspended the 26 members and fined 10 of them nearly PKR 2 million collectively for vandalism. Opposition Leader Ahmad Khan Bachar condemned the action as political revenge and vowed to continue parallel sessions until the members are reinstated.
