Lahore Qalandars appoints Darren Gough as head coach for HBL PSL 2025
The former England Test pacer succeeds Aaqib Javed, who served as Director of Cricket Operations and Head Coach of the Qalandars for eight HBL PSL seasons.
After utilizing Darren Gough’s expertise in the Global Super League last year, the two-time HBL PSL champions, Lahore Qalandars, have announced his appointment as head coach for the league’s tenth edition, scheduled for April-May.
“This marks a successful return for Gough in the role, who previously had a successful stint with Qalandars during the inaugural Global Super League last year,” the franchise stated in a press release on Thursday.
“Under his guidance during the Global Super League, Lahore Qalandars demonstrated exceptional performances. His association with Lahore Qalandars is set to invigorate the squad with renewed energy and a focus on building a championship-winning team,” the statement added.
Gough succeeds Aaqib Javed, who served as Director of Cricket Operations and Head Coach of the Qalandars for eight PSL seasons. Javed has since transitioned to a role with the PCB as a selector and interim white-ball coach for the national men’s team.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Gough shared his excitement about rejoining the Qalandars.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be back with Lahore Qalandars. The passion and energy of the team, along with its incredible fan base, are unmatched. The PSL is a fantastic platform, with an amazing talent pool in the Qalandars roster, and I’m eager to contribute to helping the Qalandars reach new heights this season,” Gough said.
“I am confident we can achieve something special. I believe in the potential of this squad, and together, we will work hard to bring success to the Qalandars and make our fans proud. With the unwavering support of our amazing fan base, we’re ready to give it our all and deliver exciting cricket this season,” he added.
Team Director Sameen Rana praised Gough’s leadership and alignment with the Qalandars' ethos.
“Darren Gough is an exceptional leader who understands our culture and spirit. His contributions to the Global Super League were invaluable, and we are thrilled to have him lead us in HBL PSL 10. His experience and passion will undoubtedly inspire our players to excel,” Rana remarked.
Gough, who previously served as England's bowling consultant in 2020, joined Yorkshire in 2021 and helped establish a partnership with the Qalandars to foster talent and reduce entry barriers.
Lahore Qalandars have retained key players, including skipper Shaheen Afridi (platinum), Fakhar Zaman (platinum), Haris Rauf (diamond, brand ambassador), Sikandar Raza (diamond), Abdullah Shafique (gold), Jehandad Khan (gold), Zaman Khan (gold), and David Wiese (silver).
The players' draft for the league is set to take place on Monday in Lahore.
