Oil tanker freight rates have surged to record levels amid escalating military tensions in the Middle East, according to a Topline Securities report, raising concerns that higher shipping and insurance costs could lift global oil prices.

How high have oil tanker freight rates climbed?

Daily oil tanker freight rates have climbed to as high as $254,000, according to Topline Securities, compared with a typical range of $20,000 to $50,000 before the conflict. Rates on some routes have reportedly reached a record $280,000 a day, more than five times normal levels.

The surge significantly raises the cost of transporting crude oil from the Middle East to the Far East. According to Topline Securities, daily rates remained between $20,000 and $50,000 during 2022-2025 before climbing sharply as geopolitical risks intensified.

How could higher tanker freight rates affect oil prices?

The conflict has also heightened concerns over rising insurance premiums for tankers operating in the region, adding to the cost of crude shipments. Higher freight and insurance charges could put further upward pressure on international oil prices, increasing import costs for oil-dependent economies.

The extent to which these costs are reflected in global crude prices and domestic fuel prices will depend on the duration of the conflict, security conditions along key shipping routes and the availability of alternative supply arrangements.
