Pakistan Railways has announced plans to introduce high-speed diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains, marking a major step towards modernizing the country’s rail network.
The new trains, capable of running at 160 km/h, will first operate between Lahore, Lala Musa, and Rawalpindi.
The project will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with investors handling financing, procurement, and maintenance, while Pakistan Railways will provide track access and oversee operations.
Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi chaired a meeting on Thursday in Islamabad to discuss the plan. Senior officials, including Federal Secretary Railways Syed Mazhar Ali Shah and Secretary Railways Board Muhammad Yousuf, attended the session.
Railway officials said the introduction of DMU trains would enhance passenger comfort and cut travel time. The trains will have a seating capacity of 380 passengers. Officials also emphasized the project’s role in boosting economic development and infrastructure.
“The inclusion of DMU trains is a key step in modernizing our railway system,” the ministry stated.
DMU trains are self-propelled units with built-in diesel engines, eliminating the need for separate locomotives. They are widely used globally, including in the UK, for their efficiency and lower operating costs.
Pakistan’s railway network has long struggled with outdated infrastructure and slow services. The new DMU project aligns with the government’s vision to improve rail connectivity between major cities and enhance travel convenience.
