Police chief vowed 'iron hand' treatment for serious crimes
Police in central Pakistan arrested a man within an hour of allegedly shooting and killing a young woman who had refused his advances, authorities said Saturday.
The incident took place in Faisalabad, a major industrial hub located about 120 kilometers west of Lahore in Punjab.
The suspect, identified only as Ahmad, was taken into custody by a special team formed under SP Iqbal Division Saeed Ahmad, according to a Faisalabad Police spokesperson. The arrest came after Ahmad allegedly shot and killed Fatima, a local resident, in the Partab Nagar area.
The victim was walking through Lane No. 11 when Ahmad opened fire with a pistol, striking her in the neck, police said. Fatima died at the scene, and Ahmad fled immediately after the shooting.
City Police Officer Sahebzada Bilal Umar assembled the arrest team following the killing, directing officers from the Factory Area Police Station to conduct the operation. The team, working under the Iqbal Division's supervision, located and detained Ahmad in what officials described as a swift response to the violent crime.
"The accused will be given punishment according to law as per facts," CPO Bilal Umar said in a statement. "Those involved in serious crimes will be dealt with an iron hand."
Factory Area Police Station officers secured the crime scene after the shooting, transferred Fatima's body to a hospital, and initiated legal proceedings. The investigation into the case is ongoing, with Ahmad now in police custody.
The killing comes weeks after 17-year-old social media influencer Sana Yousaf was shot dead in her Islamabad home, highlighting ongoing violence against women across Pakistan.
