RTA introduces AI-assisted vehicle for enhanced road safety
Smart vehicle features advanced cameras, sensors and reduces inspection time by 70%
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has inaugurated a pilot project to deploy an AI-assisted vehicle designed for automated detection of road damage and inspection of traffic diversions. The initiative highlights RTA’s dedication to incorporating cutting-edge digital and artificial intelligence technologies to improve the road network and traffic safety in Dubai, aligning with their vision of becoming a world leader in seamless and sustainable mobility.
The smart vehicle is equipped with state-of-the-art tools for collecting data on the condition of the right-of-way and ensuring traffic diversions comply with RTA’s stringent technical standards. Featuring advanced cameras, sensors, and other technical devices, the vehicle can identify damage to road infrastructure, generate detailed reports, and upload them to the system autonomously, eliminating the need for human intervention.
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency, emphasized the RTA’s commitment to enhancing the efficiency of monitoring and detecting road damage and reducing response times. “This initiative will contribute to extending the lifespan and sustainability of road assets and facilities while maintaining Dubai's urban aesthetic. It will also improve the performance of the emirate's infrastructure and road network, supporting economic and population growth, and reinforcing Dubai’s reputation as a safe and attractive destination for residents and visitors,” Al Banna stated.
Al Banna further detailed the vehicle’s exceptional capabilities, noting that it employs automated technologies to detect road damage and transmit data for processing and analysis using pre-fed data and self-learning technology. The smart vehicle provides up to 30% more comprehensive site coverage and reduces inspection time by at least 70% compared to traditional methods.
Reports generated by the vehicle on road infrastructure damage boast accuracy rates exceeding 85%, a significant improvement over conventional techniques. Additionally, the vehicle ensures that traffic diversions meet approved specifications, facilitating smooth and safe traffic flow for all road users.
Concluding his remarks, Al Banna reaffirmed RTA’s ongoing efforts to embrace the industrial revolution and adopt the latest digital technologies in asset inspection, evaluation, and proactive maintenance. “RTA is committed to implementing best practices and standards in asset sustainability and providing safe and smooth mobility for motorists and pedestrians in Dubai, ensuring safe and efficient road crossings,” he said.
