Officials say train entered a loop line instead of the main line

Accident occurred in Tiruvallur region of Tamil Nadu

A collision between a passenger train and a stationary freight train a day earlier in southern India caused 12 coaches to derail.

At least 19 passengers were injured in the incident in the Tiruvallur region of Tamil Nadu state and were taken to a nearby hospital.

Several passengers were left stranded after the incident, which also caused other train services to be rescheduled or canceled.

The Mysuru-Darbhanga express entered a loop line instead of the main line, a railway official said.

The cause of the accident is believed to be signal failure. No deaths have been reported.

According to local media, Mysuru-Darbhanga Bhagmati express derailed and fire erupted in two coaches after the train rammed the rear of a goods train stationed on a loop line at the Kavaraipettai railway station on Friday.

Police also reported that a fire broke out quickly near a coach, but railway officials did not confirm this information. Rescue teams and ambulances were deployed to the accident site to provide assistance.
