Two held In Zambia for targeting President with sorcery
Suspects arrested for allegedly using charms and a chameleon for witchcraft
Zambian police arrested two men on Friday for allegedly attempting to harm President Hakainde Hichilema using witchcraft.
The suspects, identified as Mozambican national Jasten Mabulesse Candunde, 42, and Zambian village chief Leonard Phiri, 43, were detained in Lusaka. Authorities said they were found with various charms, including a live chameleon, which they allegedly intended to use for their plot.
A police statement noted that the pair are suspected witchdoctors hired by the brother of an opposition member of parliament. The MP is facing charges of robbery, attempted murder, and escape from custody.
"The suspects' mission was to harm the president through witchcraft, using charms and other items," police said. They face charges of animal cruelty, with plans for their court appearance to be arranged shortly.
The incident highlights ongoing political tensions in Zambia as President Hichilema’s administration confronts opposition challenges. No specific threats had been made against the president previously, but authorities are taking the matter seriously.
