UAE's shortest day of the year is this Saturday
The Winter Solstice occurs when the Earth’s axial tilt is farthest away from the Sun, resulting in the least amount of daylight for the Northern Hemisphere
As the year draws to a close, December 21st marks a significant astronomical event in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) — the Winter Solstice. Known as the shortest day of the year, this date holds a special place in the celestial calendar, not just for its scientific implications but also for the cultural and seasonal transitions it signifies.
What is the Winter Solstice?
The Winter Solstice occurs when the Earth’s axial tilt is farthest away from the Sun, resulting in the least amount of daylight for the Northern Hemisphere. In the UAE, residents will experience the shortest day and longest night of the year, as the Sun reaches its lowest altitude in the sky. This astronomical phenomenon happens at the same time globally, but the specific effects vary depending on geographical location.
Daylight hours in the UAE
On December 21, the UAE will experience approximately 10 hours and 33 minutes of daylight, significantly shorter than the summer solstice in June, when daylight lasts for nearly 14 hours. The Sun is expected to rise around 7:04 AM and set at approximately 5:37 PM in Dubai, creating a noticeably compressed day.
While the UAE’s desert climate doesn’t exhibit drastic seasonal changes, the Winter Solstice is often associated with cooler temperatures and the onset of winter. This period is cherished by residents and tourists alike, as it offers an ideal climate for outdoor activities, festivals, and exploring the country’s natural and urban landscapes.
