The United States is pushing for a UN Security Council vote on Monday regarding a brief resolution calling for a “swift end” to the war in Ukraine, notably omitting any mention of territories occupied by Russia.

This resolution comes as the U.S. competes with a draft from Kyiv and European Union allies, which is set for a vote in the UN General Assembly.

The U.S. text urges peace between Ukraine and Russia but does not address the contentious issue of Russian-occupied Ukrainian land.

According to diplomatic sources, the U.S. plans to submit the resolution for Security Council approval on Monday, despite the body’s paralysis on Ukraine due to Russia’s veto power.

Moscow’s UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, called the draft “a good move,” but also emphasized that it failed to address the root causes of the conflict.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the resolution as “simple” and “historic,” urging UN member states to back the draft to chart a path to peace.

Rubio also reaffirmed U.S. President Donald Trump’s commitment to ending the conflict through meaningful action at the UN.

In a recent call with Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiga, Rubio reiterated Trump’s resolve to engage in effective action at the UN Security Council to bring the war to a close.
