Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan will serve as Afghanistan cricket team mentor during the ICC Champions Trophy which Pakistan will host from February 19 to March 9.

Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) spokesman Nasim Sadaat confirmed it to Nukta on Wednesday that Younis’s services have been hired.

“The news is confirmed. He will join the team in preparation and conditioning camp in Pakistan before the event begins,” Nasim told Nukta.

“He will accompany the team till the end of the Champions Trophy,” Nasim added.

Younis also served as Afghanistan's batting coach in 2022.

In the ICC Champions Trophy, Afghanistan have been clubbed in Group B with England, South Africa and Australia.

The Group A carries defending champions Pakistan, India, New Zealand and Bangladesh.

It is highly expected that Younis will join Afghanistan team in Karachi as Afghans will begin their journey with the match against South Africa at National Stadium Karachi on February 21.

They will then face England at the Gaddafi Stadium Lahore on February 26 and Australia also at the same venue on February 28.

The top two teams from each group will make it to the semi-finals which will be conducted on March 4 and 5 at Dubai and Lahore respectively.

The March 9 final will be conducted at Lahore unless India qualifies for the decider.
