6 Bollywood films which should be re-released!
Just imagine the scenario at the box office if Deewar, Shaan and Andaz Apna Apna re-release today!
Deewar remains relevant even today because of its script, screenplay, and execution
Shaan, Andaz Apna Apna may have flopped but they will surely succeed if released today
Classics like Guide, DDLJ, and Hera Pheri still have the power to fill up empty cinemas
Bollywood is on a spree of re-releasing films these days; Laila Majnu was re-released to capitalize on Triptii Dimri’s new-found success, whereas Hum Aapke Hain Koun...!also made it to the screens on its 30th anniversary.
Even Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan's classic Karan Arjun will also be making a comeback next month, 29 years after its initial release. The trend of re-releasing classics isn’t new, as colored versions of Mughal e Azam, Naya Daur, and Hum Dono, as well as the 3D version of Sholay, were re-released recently.
However, a few more films demand re-releases because of their popularity, longevity, and sheer brilliance. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and give distributors an idea to make money!

Guide – 1965
Cast: Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman
Writer: Vijay Anand
Music: Sachin Dev Burman
Director: Vijay Anand
Why it should be re-released: Guide wasn’t just way ahead of its time; it was one of the few films that have stayed relevant despite being released nearly 60 years ago. From its soundtrack to cinematography, it gave the audience everything they needed to see in a romantic film.
Add the debonair Dev Anand and the ravishing Waheeda Rehman, and you have a complete package that would do well in cinemas, whenever released.
Deewar – 1975
IMDb
Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi, Shashi Kapoor, Nirupa Roy, Neetu Singh, Iftekhar, Madan Puri
Writer: Salim–Javed
Music: Rahul Dev Burman
Director: Yash Chopra
Why it should be re-released: Aside from Mughal-e-Azam, the only other Bollywood film with one-liners and relevant dialogues today is Deewar. The film didn't just make stars out of screenwriters Salim–Javed (Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar) but also gave Bollywood the Angry Young Man it cherishes to date. From "mere paas maa hai", to "Khush tau bohat ho gay tum", this film has so many memorable dialogues that if released today, a spontaneous meme fest could potentially break the internet.
Also, Amitabh Bachchan’s brilliance as The Angry Young Man and Shashi Kapoor’s righteousness matched each other, as both vied for their screen mother, Nirupa Roy’s attention for most of the film. In the end, it was good that it triumphed over evil, but it left the audience teary-eyed, which is something the film can accomplish even today.
Shaan – 1980
Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Sunil Dutt, Raakhee, Parveen Babi, Bindiya Goswami, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Johnny Walker
Writer: Salim – Javed
Music: Rahul Dev Burman
Director: Ramesh Sippy
Why it should be re-released: Shaan was made for today. Looking at the cinema that preceded and succeeded the film, you will know what difference Shaan made to Bollywood. Unlike Sholay, it was a one-of-its-kind action film set in the modern world and had a soundtrack to die for. Mazhar Khan (Abdul) and Kulbhushan Kharbanda (Shakal) entered Bollywood with this film.
The first act was all fun and games, the second one had tragedy written all over it, and the third and final act was action with a capital A, which dominated. Who can forget Amitabh Bachchan’s fight against the crocodile and the climax song 'Yamma Yamma,' which heralded Bollywood into the modern era.

Andaz Apna Apna – 1994
Cast: Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Paresh Rawal, Shehzad Ali Khan, Viju Khote, Shakti Kapoor
Writer: Rajkumar Santoshi, Dilip Shukla
Music: Tushar Bhatia
Director: Rajkumar Santoshi
Why it should be re-released: If Deewar is the benchmark for most memorable dialogs in an action film, the honor if given to a comedy caper, could only be bestowed upon Andaz Apna Apna. Inspired by countless con films, this Aamir Khan – Salman Khan starrer gave the audience some of the best one-liners in Bollywood history. The film flopped big time when it was released in India but achieved cult status when released on video and on TV channels.
Paresh Rawal’s, "Teja main hoon mark idhar hai", Shakti Kapoor’s, "Khandani chor hoon, Mogambo ka bhatija, Gogo", were matched by Aamir Khan’s, "Do dost ek pyali mein chai peeyenge" and Salman Khan’s, "Sawal jawab Sawal jawab, lambi khamoshi". That’s not all, the songs were as outstanding, as was the support cast featuring Viju Khote and Shehzad Ali Khan, whose voice was supposedly dubbed by his famous father Ajit.
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge - 1995
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal
Writer: Aditya Chopra
Music: Jatin - Lalit
Director: Aditya Chopra
Why it should be re-released: Even though DDLJ is more recent than most of the films on this list, it will always be a safe bet, considering it had a melodious soundtrack, brilliant chemistry between the co-stars and a message for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
Add to that a forever-young Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the picturesque locations of Europe and Indian Punjab, and you have a film that will never get old. It changed how films were made in the '90s and brought back an era of clean romance and masala entertainment.
Hera Pheri - 2000
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Tabu
Writer: Neeraj Vora
Music: Anu Malik, Lalit Sen, Bally Sagoo
Director: Priyadarshan
Why it should be re-released: It's Hera Pheri, a film that revived the careers of Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, and Paresh Rawal, who until then were considered heroes or villains. After this Priyadarshan classic, they became known for their wit and comic timing. The film's most significant contribution to cinema is Neeraj Vora’s script and dialogues, which have stood the test of time because of their unusual delivery.
Yes, the soundtrack was the film’s weakest point, but who cares when every moment is filled with laughter, even if it involves eviction, kidnapping, and unemployment? Watch it for Baburao, Raju, Ghanshayam, and Om Puri’s Kharak Singh, who make you laugh despite chasing a lost cause.
