Abu Dhabi clean energy generation has grown by more than 1,000 percent between 2020 and 2025, the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) said, WAM reported. Nuclear, solar and wind power drove the rise.
How much has Abu Dhabi’s clean energy grown?
Clean energy generation in Abu Dhabi rose from about 4,100 gigawatt hours (GWh) in 2020 to more than 49,300 GWh in 2025. Renewable and clean sources now account for almost 46 percent of total power generation. In 2020, their share was under 5 percent.
What share of Abu Dhabi’s power comes from clean energy?
EWEC’s latest consolidated operational data shows clean sources now make up almost 46 percent of Abu Dhabi’s total power generation. In 2020, that share stood below 5 percent.
The progress reflects EWEC’s long-term capacity planning. It also reflects the integration of renewable and clean energy technologies into the power system.
What is driving Abu Dhabi’s clean energy growth?
The four units of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant came online progressively between 2020 and 2024. Barakah is the first nuclear energy plant in the Arab world. Its units provide a continuous source of emissions-free baseload power.
Projects commissioned and developed by EWEC also expanded renewable generation over the same period. They include Al Dhafra Solar PV and Noor Abu Dhabi, two of the world’s largest single-site solar power plants.
What did EWEC say about the results?
Mohamed Almarzooqi, Chief Assets Officer of EWEC, said the results show the impact of long-term planning. He said integrating nuclear, solar and wind at scale is cutting carbon intensity while keeping supply reliable and secure.
That reliability is needed to support the UAE’s continued economic growth, he added.
What are Abu Dhabi’s next clean energy goals?
EWEC will keep adding renewable and clean energy capacity, Almarzooqi said. It will also strengthen system flexibility to build a more resilient and sustainable energy system for Abu Dhabi and the UAE.
The expansion supports the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy’s Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 for Electricity Production. It also backs the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.
