Arsenal suffered a stunning Carabao Cup exit after losing to fourth-tier Fleetwood Town on penalties in a dramatic fourth-round encounter on Tuesday, with Mikel Arteta describing the result as “a very sad day”.
The Gunners were held to a 1-1 draw in normal time before suffering a 5-3 defeat in the shootout, marking one of the most humiliating setbacks of Arteta’s tenure.
Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave Fleetwood a first-half lead before Viktor Gyokeres restored parity after the interval. However, Arsenal failed to find a winner despite dominating possession and creating several opportunities.
Bruno Guimaraes saw his penalty saved by Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch, while Conor Haughey converted the decisive spot-kick to seal a memorable victory for the hosts.
Arsenal’s misery was compounded late in the game when 16-year-old prospect Max Dowman was sent off for violent conduct.
How did Fleetwood pull off a remarkable upset?
Fleetwood produced a disciplined performance to overcome the considerable gap between the two clubs in English football’s league system, frustrating Arsenal with a compact defensive structure and dangerous counterattacks.
Manager Matt Lawlor’s tactical approach prevented the Premier League champions from establishing sustained momentum, allowing the League Two side to remain competitive throughout the contest before delivering the decisive blow in the shootout.
“I just can’t believe it,” Lawlor said. “The biggest night in the club’s history in terms of opposition coming to town, and we’ve managed to beat the champions.
“We’re not stupid enough and not egotistical enough that you think we’re going to outplay the best team in the country and the most organized team in the country.
“So we had to ride our luck, we had to deny space, we had to deny options for them. And I think we did that really, really well in terms of the majority of the game.”
Lawlor struggled to contain his emotions after the final penalty, with Fleetwood supporters celebrating on the pitch following the club’s historic triumph.
“I’m just so glad that the lads have the feeling the way they are and took that performance into make that town, the club, everyone proud,” he said.
What did Arteta say after Arsenal’s defeat?
Arteta acknowledged that Arsenal had fallen short despite their attacking dominance, conceding that the team had failed to make their opportunities count.
“First of all, congratulations to Fleetwood for going through the next round, the manner that they have done it, and for us a very sad day,” Arteta said.
“There is nothing to criticize the players for their attitude, their application.
“The determination, you could see that was there from the start, even with 10 men. But we conceded a really poor goal to start with that gave them some momentum.
“Obviously we have so much of the ball, so many chances, so many shots, and if you want the margins to be bigger than going to the penalties, you need to capitalize on that. And we didn’t.
“It’s football, that’s the beauty of this competition. It’s a very sad day.”
The Arsenal manager also insisted that his players had demonstrated the right attitude, despite the disappointing outcome.
“Zero problem attitude-wise,” Arteta said. “Otherwise, I would be here absolutely fuming. I’m sad, I think we are all sad. We have a massive responsibility to carry this badge in the best possible way.
“You don’t capitalize, then you cannot go through to the next round. Unfortunately, we are out.”
Did Arteta’s team selection contribute to the defeat?
Arteta made nine changes to his starting lineup, seemingly prioritising Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Liverpool. However, the decision backfired as Arsenal failed to overcome lower-league opposition.
The Gunners had entered the match in impressive form after defeating Everton 2-0 to move level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. They had won 11 of their previous 13 matches but were unable to extend that run at Fleetwood.
Arsenal have experienced similar cup disappointments before, including a penalty shootout defeat against fourth-tier Bradford City in the League Cup in 2012. They also lost to Southampton in the FA Cup last season and Nottingham Forest in the same competition in 2022, when Forest were in the Championship.
Arsenal must now regroup quickly ahead of their crucial Premier League trip to Liverpool, while Fleetwood celebrate a victory that will be remembered as one of the greatest nights in the club’s history.
