As fuel prices and changing mobility preferences reshape the automotive conversation in Pakistan, hybrid vehicles are becoming an increasingly important consideration for motorists. Yet, not all hybrid systems work in the same way. Differences in electric motor capability, battery capacity and power management can significantly influence how a vehicle performs and feels on the road.

With the All-New MG HS and All-New MG ZS, MG Pakistan is bringing its Hybrid+ technology to two SUV segments, while the HS range also introduces Super Hybrid plug-in hybrid technology. Together, these powertrains reflect a broader philosophy: making electric power a more prominent part of everyday driving without sacrificing the flexibility of a petrol engine.

Beyond the conventional hybrid experience

A conventional hybrid combines a petrol engine, an electric motor and a battery. The electric motor assists the engine, recovers energy during deceleration and, depending on the system, propels the vehicle electrically under certain conditions.

MG’s Hybrid+ technology flips the script. Instead of an engine-first approach, this is a "Highly Electrified" architecture. It is specifically engineered to be run at normal petrol. MG Hybrid+ is built on a principle to give the electric motor a more prominent role in the driving experience.

In the All-New MG HS Hybrid+, the electric motor isn't an assistant—it’s the protagonist. The traction motor (146kW) is nearly 40% more powerful than the engine (105kW). This electric-first approach is designed to deliver responsive acceleration, particularly at lower speeds, with the petrol engine contributing when required.

The HS Hybrid+ produces a claimed 340 Nm of torque and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. Its 1.83 kWh water-cooled battery supports the hybrid system, while three levels of regenerative braking allow drivers to adjust energy recovery according to their preferences.

Regenerative braking converts some of the vehicle’s kinetic energy during deceleration into electrical energy, which can be stored in the battery for later use. Meanwhile, intelligent power management allows the system to move between EV, Series and Parallel operating modes, depending on driving conditions.

The key advantage for drivers is that Hybrid+ does not require external charging. It offers an electric-first driving experience while retaining the familiar refuelling routine of a conventional petrol vehicle.

One technology, two SUV segments

MG is extending its Hybrid+ offering beyond the HS to the All-New MG ZS, bringing electrified driving into the B-SUV category.

The ZS Hybrid+ Excite and Hybrid+ Essence feature a 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain paired with a three-speed hybrid transmission. The system delivers 158 kW of combined power and 465 Nm of combined torque.

Designed around an electric-first driving feel, the ZS Hybrid+ combines responsive performance with the convenience of a self-charging hybrid system. It gives buyers moving up from sedans or conventional compact SUVs another option to consider, without requiring them to adopt external charging as part of their routine.

The HS and ZS therefore bring MG’s Hybrid+ philosophy to different SUV categories, with their respective powertrain configurations and specifications.

Super Hybrid: taking electric driving further

For motorists who want to spend more time driving on electric power alone, the All-New MG HS Super Hybrid introduces a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) system.

Its 24.7 kWh battery can be charged externally and offers a pure-electric driving range of up to 135 km under the NEDC. This creates the possibility of completing many routine journeys on electric power alone, depending on driving conditions and the available battery charge.

The HS Super Hybrid features a 154 kW electric motor, with claimed combined system output of 220 kW and 350 Nm of torque. MG quotes a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 6.8 seconds.

For longer journeys, the petrol engine and electric system work together. When the available battery charge becomes low, the vehicle continues operating as a hybrid, giving drivers the flexibility to travel further without relying exclusively on charging infrastructure.

The distinction between Hybrid+ and Super Hybrid is therefore more than battery size. Hybrid+ offers electrified driving without plugging in, while Super Hybrid adds the option of charging externally and undertaking longer electric-only journeys.

Bringing the EV-like experience within reach

The move towards electrification does not look the same for every motorist. Some drivers prioritise the convenience of a self-charging hybrid, while others want the ability to complete more journeys on electric power alone.

MG’s approach recognises these different needs. With Hybrid+ available in both the All-New MG HS and All-New MG ZS, and Super Hybrid offered in the HS range, the brand is expanding the ways Pakistani motorists can experience electric-first driving.

The result is a broader choice of electrified SUVs built around a common idea: bringing the responsiveness and refinement associated with electric driving into everyday motoring, while retaining the flexibility that hybrid technology provides.
