Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Senator Rana Sanaullah were appointed to the Judicial Commission of Pakistan on Friday, according to an official notification. They fill two seats left vacant by the resignations of PPP Senator Farooq H. Naek and PML-N member Aftab Sheikh.
Who are the new members of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan?
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will represent the treasury benches in the National Assembly, and Rana Sanaullah will represent the treasury benches in the Senate. Both were nominated under Article 175A(2), paragraph (vii), of the Constitution, with the approval of Chief Justice Yahya Afridi.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the leader of the House in the National Assembly, nominated Bilawal. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sen. Ishaq Dar, the leader of the House in the Senate, nominated Sanaullah.
When will the Judicial Commission of Pakistan meet next?
The commission is scheduled to meet on Oct. 13. Its agenda includes considering an extension of the term of the constitutional benches of the Sindh High Court.
What does the Judicial Commission of Pakistan do?
Article 175A of the Constitution mandates the commission to appoint judges to the Federal Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court, the high courts and the Federal Shariat Court. It is also responsible for evaluating the performance of high court judges.
Who sits on the Judicial Commission of Pakistan?
The 26th Constitutional Amendment reconstituted the commission to include four members of Parliament. Two come from the treasury benches and two from the opposition benches, and each group has one member from the National Assembly and one from the Senate.
The commission also includes the chief justices of the Supreme Court and the Federal Constitutional Court, and the next most senior judge of each court. Two judges from each court, jointly nominated by the respective chief justices, serve two-year terms.
Other members are the federal law minister, the attorney general for Pakistan, and an advocate with at least 15 years of practice in the Supreme Court. The commission also includes a woman, non-Muslim or technocrat who is not a member of Parliament but is qualified to become one.
