Pakistan and China have launched the China-Pakistan Information Corridor (CPIC) in Islamabad to combat misinformation and improve public understanding of their bilateral ties, state-run Radio Pakistan reported.

The initiative will work through media cooperation, research, business links and cultural exchanges.

What is the China-Pakistan Information Corridor?

The China-Pakistan Information Corridor is a joint initiative connecting media organizations, think tanks, universities, businesses and young people in both countries. It builds on a partnership traditionally centered on economic and strategic cooperation. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar described it as a complement to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), focused on public understanding of the relationship.

Tarar said the corridor would help preserve the countries’ longstanding friendship for future generations while strengthening mutual understanding through information sharing and digital platforms. CPEC is the flagship infrastructure and connectivity program linking the two countries.

While CPEC connects their economies, he said, the new initiative would focus on strengthening public understanding of their relationship.

What are the four pillars of the China-Pakistan Information Corridor?

The corridor will operate through four pillars covering media, business and enterprise, think tanks, and culture, tourism and youth. Its media component will promote the exchange of verified news between Pakistani and Chinese organizations and introduce fact-checking mechanisms to address misinformation.

The business pillar will seek to expand trade and investment links, while the think-tank component will encourage joint research, policy dialogue and publications. Cultural and youth exchanges are intended to deepen people-to-people contacts and increase opportunities for engagement between the two countries.

Tarar also announced that the corridor’s first regional office for its trade pillar had been established in Karachi.

What did Chinese and Pakistani officials say about the corridor?

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong said the initiative would strengthen understanding of each country’s culture and traditions through greater information sharing. He added that it could help counter propaganda targeting the two countries and contribute to shaping public opinion.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning described the initiative as important at a time when fake news and misinformation posed growing challenges. She said its four pillars could help communicate the scope of bilateral cooperation to wider audiences and build public support for the relationship. Mao added that the corridor would reinforce the public foundations of the countries’ all-weather strategic cooperative partnership.

Information Secretary Ashfaq Ahmed Khalil said the platform would build on existing agreements between Pakistani and Chinese news agencies, broadcasters and film organizations covering news exchange, content sharing and joint production. He said the initiative aimed to enable both countries to present their partnership accurately and positively, while expanding exchanges of media content, information and professional expertise.

The launch ceremony at the Pakistan-China Friendship Centre in Islamabad included screenings of documentaries on the countries’ longstanding strategic partnership and cultural performances celebrating their ties.
