Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that the 2026-27 season could be his final campaign as a professional footballer after the Portugal captain recently married Georgina Rodriguez and began looking towards life beyond the game.
Is Cristiano Ronaldo retiring from football?
Cristiano Ronaldo has not formally announced his retirement, but he has given his clearest indication yet that he could stop playing after the 2026-27 season. The 41-year-old said it is “probably my last year of football” and wants to leave behind a “spectacular legacy” before moving into the next stage of his life.
Ronaldo has spent almost four years with Saudi Pro League champions Al-Nassr and has one year remaining on his contract. His comments come shortly after his wedding to long-time partner Georgina Rodriguez.
Why could this be Ronaldo's final season?
Ronaldo has spent 25 years competing at the highest level and described his career as one filled with significant sacrifice.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has already started thinking about what that future could look like. He mentioned travelling, spending more time with family and playing padel among the activities he hopes to enjoy.
What has Cristiano Ronaldo achieved in his career?
Ronaldo leaves himself with a remarkable record whenever his playing career eventually comes to an end. He has won league titles in England, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia, while also lifting the Champions League trophy five times.
The Portugal captain is also the all-time leading scorer in men's international football. His career has taken him from Sporting CP and Manchester United to Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr, while his longevity has allowed him to remain a major figure in world football into his 40s.
Can Cristiano Ronaldo reach 1,000 career goals?
Ronaldo still has one major individual milestone within reach before he considers life after football. He is currently 24 goals away from reaching 1,000 senior career goals.
Reaching that mark would provide another defining achievement at the end of a career already filled with records and trophies.
How does Ronaldo's future compare with Lionel Messi's?
Ronaldo's comments come at a time when questions are also being asked about how much longer Lionel Messi will continue playing. The Argentine, who has won a record eight Ballon d’Or awards, has also expressed uncertainty over his future in football.
Their recent World Cup campaigns offered contrasting outcomes. Ronaldo's Portugal were eliminated in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, while Messi scored eight goals and helped Argentina reach the final.
For now, Ronaldo remains with Al-Nassr, although he did not play in the club's opening Saudi Pro League match against Al Fateh. He watched the champions' victory from the stands alongside his family, with his future now becoming one of football's biggest questions.
