Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has granted the first two Independent Charge Point Operator (CPO) licenses for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Dubai to Tesla and UAEV, according to Emirates News Agency - WAM.

The development is part of DEWA’s newly established Regulatory and Licensing Framework, aimed at supporting the growth of EV charging infrastructure in the Emirate, noted WAM.

The framework, which addresses both current and future needs, plays a crucial role in Dubai’s push towards green mobility and its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

It facilitates the development of robust infrastructure to meet the rising demand for EVs while ensuring a safe and seamless experience for users.

MD and CEO of DEWA Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer awarded the licenses to Sharif Al Olama, undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs and chairman of UAEV, and Mottie Benhamou, Tesla UAE market leader.

Al Tayer emphasized DEWA’s ongoing commitment to green mobility, noting that the framework enhances public-private collaboration and addresses the growing need for more EV charging stations in line with global standard, according to WAM.

He highlighted DEWA's efforts to involve the private sector in advancing sustainability and reducing emissions in the transportation sector, which aligns with Dubai’s broader environmental goals.

The initiative also promotes investment in green mobility infrastructure, contributing to both economic growth and environmental protection.

Sharif Al Olama expressed pride in the UAE's expanding EV market, stressing the aim to make electric and hybrid vehicles 50% of the total vehicles on UAE roads by 2050.

He noted that the new CPO license would help UAEV play a key role in decarbonizing the transport sector.

Mottie Benhamou of Tesla UAE added that Tesla’s mission to promote sustainable energy aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy, and that expanding access to innovative EV charging solutions supports the country’s efforts to reduce fossil fuel dependence and boost EV adoption.
