Dubai residents can now propose new names for streets and roads across the Emirate. Under the supervision of Dubai Municipality, the Dubai Road Naming Committee has introduced a new platform, Street Designation Proposal, for the public to share ideas.

The Committee’s goal behind the new platform is to promote community participation, honor historical legacy, cultural advancement, as well as keep up with the Emirate’s future development and celebrate its high-value achievements.

The naming process is expected to be inferential. People should associate a place with its names, signs, and location details. Therefore, the Committee has developed a specific classification.

The classification features names associated with Arabic and Islamic design, architecture, art, culture, and poetic prosody. Some names are related to local plants, animals, archaeological sites, local and ancient jewelry. Meanwhile, others are inspired by names of farming and agriculture, industrial and artisanal professions, their tools, various gemstones, as well as inventions and modern technology.

During the trial phase, the Committee has completed naming roads in Al-Khawaneej 2. These include names inspired by local trees, plants, and flowers. For instance, Ghaf Street, with Ghaf being one of the most famous types of trees in the area.

Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality and Chairman of the Dubai Road Naming Committee, said: “The new platform serves as a digital system, allowing the public to suggest names for streets and roads across Dubai, keeping in mind a comprehensive method and specific criteria that reflects our identity and interrelationship between past, present, and future of Dubai.”

“It aims to revive valuable historical meanings, heritage, and urban monuments, in line with Dubai’s leading global position and reputation, further consolidating diverse areas of the Emirate in the minds of present and future generations,” he added.

Executive Council Resolution No. (35) of 2021 established the Dubai Road Naming Committee, which is led by the Director General of Dubai Municipality. It includes the Director General of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, CEO of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, and four experienced representatives of Dubai citizens – Mr. Abdullah Thani Al Mataroushi, Mr. Hameed Sultan Al Matyouai, Mr. Juma Bin Thalith, and Mr. Rashid Boukhash.
