Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi assumed direct executive control over the province on Monday, October 12, declaring the eradication of terrorism and corruption as his top governance priorities following the federal government's invocation of Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution.

What security measures and administrative directives were issued by Governor Kundi?

Following the formal transfer of executive power, Governor Kundi summoned a meeting of the provincial Apex Committee at the Governor House in Peshawar to review counterterrorism operations and coordinate provincial administration.

High-ranking civil and military leadership—including the Peshawar Corps Commander, senior police officials, and intelligence heads—were directed to attend the session to formulate an immediate security roadmap.

During preliminary administrative reviews, Governor Kundi announced that shipping container blockades placed across key thoroughfares in Peshawar would be removed in phases to restore public movement, while cellular and internet services would be partially restored as security conditions stabilize.

However, provincial authorities ordered all educational institutions across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to remain closed on Monday as a precautionary measure. Emphasizing a shift in governance, Kundi stated that his administration must demonstrate a clear operational departure from the ousted setup in addressing lawlessness.

How have federal authorities and PTI reacted to the arrests of provincial leadership?

The imposition of emergency rule triggered widespread detentions across the provincial leadership. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) claimed that ousted Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, KP Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, and PTI Provincial President Junaid Akbar, along with several cabinet members and lawmakers, were taken into custody by security forces.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi acknowledged the detentions during a press briefing, stating that several individuals had been taken into protective custody to prevent public disorder and would be released once the situation normalized, while those formally wanted under active cases would face legal processing.

Although PTI issued calls for widespread public demonstrations against the imposition of Governor's Rule, heavy security deployments, checkpoint restrictions, and pre-emptive police actions kept turnout limited in major cities, though further rallies remain scheduled in Peshawar.

Military and police units maintain heightened vigilance across all district headquarters in the province.
