A female student at Fatima Jinnah Medical University has died after reportedly jumping from the third floor of her hostel, police said Tuesday.
The student, a final-year MBBS candidate, was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment but later succumbed to her injuries. She was living in the university hostel at the time of the incident.
Police initially described the case as a suspected suicide, but investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities said the case was handled under Section 174 of Pakistan’s Code of Criminal Procedure. The law requires police to investigate suspicious, accidental, or suicidal deaths, examine the body in the presence of witnesses, and submit a report to a magistrate.
Following the postmortem, the student’s family took her body to Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, where they live. Police said the family has requested that no legal action or complaint be filed against the university administration.
Police sources suggested that psychological pressure may have contributed to the student’s death. Earlier, the Medical Superintendent of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital had formed a five-member medical board to oversee her treatment.
Lahore students' suicide
In recent months, Lahore has witnessed multiple tragic incidents involving university students. In December 2025, Muhammad Awais Sultan, a 22‑year‑old fifth‑semester Pharm‑D student, died by suicide after jumping from the fourth floor of a campus building. Reports suggested that he was under intense pressure regarding attendance requirements.
Following this, in January 2026, a first‑semester Pharm‑D student at a private university in Lahore reportedly attempted suicide by jumping from the second floor of a campus building. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later placed under intensive care.
