At least four people, including three paramilitary personnel, were killed when unidentified gunmen ambushed a Frontier Corps (FC) vehicle in Pakistan’s northwestern Karak district, officials confirmed.
The FC team was travelling from the Gurguri gas plant to a CPF company site when the attack occurred, according to Karak police spokesperson Shaukat Akash.
“It was a terrorist incident. The squad was on routine patrol along the Karak gas pipeline when militants opened fire from atop a mountain,” Akash told Nukta.
The deceased have been identified as Lance Naik Mehmood Shah, Sepoy Shahidullah, Sepoy Abdul Rauf, and civilian driver Shakoor.
Karak has witnessed significant Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) activity in recent years, although no group has claimed responsibility for this latest assault.
A joint search operation by police and security forces is underway in the area, Akash added.
Official condemnations
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned the attack, paying tribute to the martyred personnel. “The entire nation stands united with our forces in the fight against terrorism,” he said, adding that the sacrifices of the fallen would not go in vain.
Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur also denounced the assault and directed authorities to swiftly apprehend those responsible.
“We salute the bravery and sacrifice of our security personnel who laid down their lives for the country,” Gandapur said. He extended condolences to the victims’ families, praying for their strength and patience in this difficult time.
Attacks on gas pipeline
Militants blew up a major gas pipeline in Karak on June 17, triggering a massive explosion and gas leak that disrupted supplies to Punjab. In March, armed assailants targeted a Sui gas facility in the same region, killing one security guard and injuring another.
Last year, a similar attack was reported at a gas and oil production site in the Sam Banda area of Banda Daud Shah tehsil in Karak.
According to locals, these recurring incidents reflect an alarming rise in militant strikes aimed at critical energy infrastructure in the region - part of a broader effort to weaken security and damage state assets.
