Glenn Phillips produced a record-breaking performance as New Zealand defeated India by seven wickets in the fifth and final T20I at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday.
Although India secured the five-match series 3-2 after winning the opening three games, the hosts finished their campaign on a high, thanks to outstanding contributions from Phillips and Tim Seifert.
How did Phillips create T20I history?
Phillips became the highest run-scorer in a bilateral T20I series, finishing with an extraordinary 341 runs across five matches.
The New Zealand batter surpassed England's Phil Salt, who previously held the record with 331 runs against the West Indies in 2023.
Phillips reached the landmark with an unbeaten 65 off just 38 deliveries in the final encounter.
His consistency was evident throughout the campaign. He began with an unbeaten 82, followed by scores of 70 and 17 before delivering a match-winning 107 in the fourth T20I in Auckland. His century helped New Zealand register an 87-run victory before he completed his record-breaking run in Hamilton.
How did Seifert and Phillips dismantle India's bowling attack?
Chasing 192, New Zealand made a comfortable start despite losing Finn Allen early in the innings.
Seifert took charge with an explosive display, attacking the Indian bowlers from the outset. The 31-year-old smashed 93 off 50 balls, including 11 boundaries and five sixes, to put the hosts firmly in control.
Having struggled to make a significant contribution in the first four matches, Seifert delivered his best performance of the series when it mattered most.
He came agonisingly close to securing his maiden T20I century but was dismissed in the 16th over after an inside edge off Nitish Kumar Reddy's delivery sent the ball onto his stumps.
His dismissal brought an end to a spectacular innings, but Phillips ensured there were no further complications as New Zealand reached 195 for three in 18 overs.
Who led New Zealand's bowling effort?
Earlier, Adam Milne played a crucial role in restricting India to 191 for eight after winning the battle with the new ball.
The right-arm pacer claimed four wickets for just 19 runs, removing both Indian openers to leave the visitors struggling at 19 for two.
Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer subsequently revived India's innings with an aggressive 93-run partnership from just 43 balls.
Kishan contributed 61, while captain Iyer added 50 to give India hopes of posting a substantially bigger total.
However, Milne returned to break the momentum, while Nathan Smith and Blair Tickner picked up two wickets apiece to prevent India from building on their promising recovery.
What comes next for India and New Zealand?
With the T20I series concluded, the two teams will now turn their attention to the 50-over format.
A five-match ODI series will begin in Auckland on Wednesday, with a two-match Test series scheduled to follow.
