Hong Kong Sixes
Pakistan kept their Hong Kong Sixes 2026 campaign alive with a convincing four-wicket victory over arch-rivals India in their second Group C encounter at Mission Road Ground in Mong Kok on Friday.
The defending champions produced a dominant batting display after restricting India to 88 in six overs, completing the chase with 13 deliveries to spare and setting up an intriguing battle for the remaining semi-final spot.
How did India struggle with the bat?
India endured a difficult outing after being sent in to bat, losing all six wickets for 88 runs in their allotted overs.
Shashank Singh provided the biggest contribution, smashing 40 off just 11 deliveries with the help of two fours and five sixes. Nitish Rana offered some support with 19 from 14 balls, including two sixes and a boundary.
T Natarajan added an unbeaten 12 off six deliveries, while Rahul Tripathi managed nine from five balls. However, Rahul Tewatia and captain Krunal Pandya failed to open their accounts.
Abdul Samad led Pakistan's bowling effort with two wickets for 10 runs in his solitary over. Ahmed Daniyal and Mohammad Shahzad also picked up a wicket each.
How did Pakistan dominate the run chase?
Pakistan wasted little time in taking control of the contest, with captain Abbas Afridi launching an extraordinary assault in the opening over.
Facing Krunal Pandya, Afridi cleared the boundary five consecutive times, helping Pakistan collect 31 runs from the first six deliveries.
Khawaja Nafay maintained the momentum by smashing five boundaries in Natarajan's over, which produced another 28 runs and took Pakistan beyond the 50-run mark.
India briefly halted the charge when Shashank dismissed Afridi for a blistering 35 off eight balls, including five sixes and a four.
Nafay, however, continued the punishment, scoring 41 from just 12 deliveries with two fours and five sixes before Tewatia brought his innings to an end.
Irfan Niazi made an immediate impact by launching his first delivery for six, while Samad remained unbeaten on seven off three balls as Pakistan completed a crucial victory, scoring 91-2 in 3.5 overs.
What does the result mean for semi-final qualification?
Pakistan currently sits at the top of the Group C standings with two points from two matches, having recorded one win and one defeat. They boast a net run rate of 3.617, putting them in a strong position heading into the final group fixture.
The UAE are second with two points from their solitary outing and a net run rate of 0.500, while India occupy third place after losing their only match, leaving them with a net run rate of -9.072.
The outcome of Saturday's India-UAE clash will determine the semi-finalist from Group C, with only one team from the group progressing to the next round.
A UAE victory would take them to four points and guarantee qualification, following their earlier success against Pakistan.
However, an Indian win would leave all three sides level on two points, bringing net run rate into play to decide which team advances.
