Iran has received a letter from U.S. Vice President JD Vance but has not yet responded, Iranian media reported Thursday. The Wall Street Journal said the letter, sent to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei, seeks to revive peace talks and avert new U.S. strikes.

Has Iran responded to the Vance letter?

No. Tasnim news agency said Iran has received the letter but has not yet responded, and Fars carried a similar account citing a source familiar with the matter. Tasnim also said any position undermining the firm framework Iran established is unacceptable.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Wednesday that Tehran was discussing a plan to end the war and reopen the strait with mediators, mainly Qatar and Pakistan.

What did the Vance letter to Iran say?

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that Vance sent the letter to Rezaei at the direction of U.S. President Donald Trump. The newspaper said the letter and subsequent contacts between U.S. and Iranian officials focused on a possible framework for negotiations rather than specific terms for a peace deal.

The reported correspondence comes as efforts to secure a lasting agreement have stalled. Tensions over the conflict continue, as do restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

How did the US-Iran war begin?

The war began Feb. 28 with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran that killed former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior military commanders. Iran retaliated with attacks on Israel and U.S. assets across the region.

Iran also imposed restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that normally carries about one-fifth of global oil consumption. The United States has also imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.

What conditions has Iran set for reopening the Strait of Hormuz?

Tehran has insisted that Washington meet seven conditions for reopening the waterway. They include a ceasefire across the Middle East, the unfreezing of Iranian assets held abroad, the lifting of sanctions on Iran's oil sector and an end to the U.S. naval blockade.

Tasnim said that "any position that undermines this firm framework established by Iran is unacceptable."
