Kings chased down massive 234-run target with four balls remaining
Vince (101) and Shah (60) formed crucial 142-run partnership
Multan Sultans suffered defeat despite posting imposing total
The Karachi Kings pulled off a remarkable run chase Saturday, defeating the Multan Sultans by four wickets in a high-scoring Pakistan Super League cricket match that thrilled thousands of fans at Karachi's National Stadium.
England's James Vince scored a blistering century as the Kings successfully chased down the Sultans' imposing total of 234, reaching 236 for six with four balls to spare in a display of batting prowess rarely seen in Pakistan's premier T20 cricket competition.
Vince hit 101 off just 43 balls in a masterful display of T20 batting.
Vince's explosive innings featured 14 boundaries and four sixes at a strike rate of 234.88, forming the cornerstone of Karachi's pursuit. His 142-run partnership with Khushdil Shah, who contributed 60 off 37 balls, transformed what had seemed an improbable chase into an achievable target.
The Kings had started aggressively with New Zealand's Tim Seifert scoring a quick-fire 32 off 16 balls, but the Sultans' bowler Akif Javed struck with two quick wickets in the fifth over, dismissing both Seifert and Shan Masood to put the Kings under pressure at 52 for three.
However, Vince's masterclass, combined with Shah's timely big hitting in the middle overs, kept the Kings in the hunt. Despite losing both set batsmen in the closing stages, Abbas Afridi sealed the victory with a powerful six off England's Chris Jordan in the final over.
Bitter defeat
For the Sultans, who had earlier posted what seemed a winning total, the defeat was particularly bitter. Their captain Mohammad Rizwan had marshalled his bowlers effectively through the middle overs, but the Kings' batting firepower proved too much in the end.
The match continues a trend of successful run chases in this season's PSL, which has seen batting-friendly conditions across venues. Just hours before in the Indian Premier League, Sunrisers Hyderabad had also completed a massive chase against Punjab Kings, suggesting a shift toward batting dominance in T20 cricket across the subcontinent.
With this victory, the Karachi Kings have now won their first match of the tournament, while the Multan Sultans, champions in 2021, will look to bounce back in their next fixture against Islamabad United.
The Pakistan Super League, now in its tenth season, features six franchise teams and has become one of the premier T20 cricket leagues globally, attracting international stars alongside Pakistan's domestic talent.
