Keeping up with the Kapoors (of Pakistan)

Momal Sheikh’s recent comment has sent Pakistan and India into sputters of incredulous laughter, but what sparked this reaction?

Keeping up with the Kapoors (of Pakistan)

Facts are king, and right off the bat, Momal Sheikh did not initiate the idea that her family are the 'Kapoors of Pakistan.'

The idea came from actress-turned-host Ushna Shah who said, "You guys are the closest thing we have to, say, the Kapoors".

Sheikh doesn't fully embrace this thought, agreeing with a hesitant, "yeah, somewhat".

She goes on to say that if we factor in the fame of Saleem Sheikh and Behroz Sabzwari’s families, then yes, her family could be known as the 'Sheikhs of Lollywood.'

The headlines mostly quoted Sheikh as saying her family are the Kapoors of Pakistan. When you put something this clickbait-y out there, people jump on it without context.

Negative comments have been dragging Sheikh, but most people didn't sit through the entire interview to understand the context. Luckily, some of us can’t rest until justice is served — especially in the most inane matters.

So now you know: Momal Sheikh was agreeing with Ushna Shah, not claiming her family are the Kapoors of Pakistan.

The interview suggests that the Sheikhs and related families could be compared to the Kapoors of Pakistan, and we're inclined to agree, but probably not in the way they’d prefer.

Here’s whom the Sheikh-Sabzwari clan could be, if we were into making comparisons, which we are, when forced to think about certain things:

For starters, Momal Sheikh is definitely Sonam Kapoor

Momal Sheikh is undeniably stylish and often gets roasted for the things she says in all earnestness. Like Sonam Kapoor, she means no harm, but somehow takes a lot of digital punches after her interviews.

Then, we have Shahroz Sabzwari aka the Ranbir Kapoor of Pakistan

We can’t help but say Sabzwari Jr. is the Ranbir Kapoor of Pakistan. Shahroz channels Ranbir Kapoor, in that he says things meant to sound smart, but which are often the opposite. In one instance, he said: “I agree that feminism is meant to give a voice to the women who are oppressed but don’t you think people are using feminism to normalize vulgarity?”

While Sabzwari was defending his wife Sadaf Kanwal's views on their marriage, his tone ended up attacking an already misunderstood concept in Pakistan. As public figures, actors should always consider that the things they say will have an impact on their followers and choose their words carefully.

And of course, Sadaf Kanwal could easily be compared to Mira Rajput (Kapoor)

Like Sadaf Kanwal, Shahid Kapoor’s wife Mira Rajput loves her family and being there for them. If life were a meme, we would put their statements down thus:

When Mira Rajput said, "I wouldn’t want to spend one hour a day with my child and rush off to work. Why did I have her? She’s not a puppy", and Sadaf Kanwal said, 'Just because you both work doesn’t mean you respect your husband less. They’re saying things like ‘apna khaana khud garam karein,’ but that’s not happening. I’ll warm up his food because that’s my love for him.'"

Then, could we say Saleem Sheikh is the Sanjay Kapoor of Pakistan?

It tracks, right? He had a powerful sibling in the industry, another family member with a successful career, and a great launch, but then what happened? Saleem Sheikh, much like Sanjay Kapoor, is nice looking with a nice personality, but his career never matched the success of his famous relatives.
