The wife of jailed former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan underwent eye surgery this week after being diagnosed with a retinal condition, prison authorities said.
Bushra Bibi, who is serving a prison sentence and is being held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, complained of impaired vision in her right eye, according to the jail superintendent. She was subsequently examined by specialist doctors, who diagnosed retinal detachment.
Medical experts advised urgent surgery and she was transferred to a private hospital in Rawalpindi on April 16, where pre-operative assessments were completed before the procedure was carried out by a team led by ophthalmologist Dr. Nadeem Qureshi.
She remained under observation overnight and was discharged in stable condition before being moved back to the prison facility, officials said, adding that follow-up care would be provided in line with medical advice.
Bushra Bibi is serving a sentence in a corruption case linked to state gifts, while her party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has raised concerns about her health and called for access to medical care.
Separately, PTI chairman Gohar Ali Khan said he had been informed of her transfer to hospital and urged authorities to allow family visits, citing legal rights and health considerations.
Imran Khan has also faced eye-related health issues during his detention, including a condition affecting vision in his right eye, according to his lawyer, who told the Supreme Court that the former premier had suffered significant sight loss while in custody.
