Student dies under mysterious circumstances at LUMS hostel, police launch investigation

Areeb Liaquat had been having breakfast when he suddenly fell ill and could not be revived, according to a spokesperson for Lahore's Cantt Division police.

An 18-year-old student died under mysterious circumstances at a hostel of the Lahore University of Management Sciences, police said.

Areeb Liaquat had been having breakfast when he suddenly fell ill and could not be revived, according to a spokesperson for Lahore's Cantt Division police.

What happened to the LUMS student who died?

Areeb Liaquat, 18, was eating breakfast at a LUMS hostel when he suddenly fell ill.

Fellow students alerted rescue services immediately, but personnel found he had already died by the time they reached the scene, according to police.

Why was Areeb Liaquat staying at LUMS?

Areeb had traveled to LUMS to sit for a competitive entrance examination, police said.

He was specially invited from another university as a high-performing student, since candidates who secure top positions in the exam are offered free education at LUMS. He was a resident of Kasur.

What are police saying about the investigation?

SP Cantt Investigations Raheela Iqbal said police and a forensic team collected evidence from the hostel room. Areeb's body was shifted to a mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

"The actual facts are expected to come to light after the post-mortem examination. Further action is being carried out as per standard procedure," Iqbal said.

Police said the body had been taken into custody and legal proceedings had been initiated. Investigators expect more details to emerge as the inquiry progresses.
