British politicians urge ECB to boycott Afghanistan match
South Africa's Sports Minister supports boycott, citing apartheid
Captain Shahidi focuses team solely on on-field performance
Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq and cricket commentator Alan Wilkins have weighed in on the growing calls for a boycott of Afghanistan's cricket team amid the Taliban's restrictions on women. Both experts believe sports should be kept separate from politics.
A group of 160 British politicians recently urged the ECB to boycott their Champions Trophy match against Afghanistan. South Africa's Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie supported this call, drawing parallels to apartheid-era sporting restrictions.
The Taliban-led government has remained silent on these boycott calls, while Afghanistan's coach Jonathan Trott acknowledged his players' difficult position: "These guys are brave. They know the difference between right and wrong. It is a real tricky situation for them."
Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi maintained his team focuses only on what they can control on the field.
