Pakistan football enters another important chapter this week as two of the country’s leading players take centre stage in UEFA club competitions.
Women’s national team striker Mariam Mahmood is set to make history with Wrexham AFC Women as the Welsh club begin their first-ever UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign. Meanwhile, Pakistan captain Abdullah Iqbal is preparing for a Champions League qualifying battle with Swedish champions Mjällby AIF.
Mariam Mahmood makes European debut with Wrexham
Wrexham will host one of the five mini-tournaments in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, with 19 teams competing for progression to the next stage.
The Welsh club begin their historic European campaign on Wednesday, 22 July, when they face Pyunik in the semi-final of Mini-tournament 3. The other semi-final sees Glentoran take on Riga.
The semi-final winners will meet in the final on Saturday, 25 July, while the defeated teams compete in the third-place match.
The five mini-tournament winners will advance to the second qualifying round, which will be played from 4 to 8 August. The competition will continue through another series of mini-tournaments, with the 11 second qualifying round winners moving into the third qualifying round, where seven teams enter automatically.
The winners of the nine third qualifying round ties will then join the nine clubs already directly qualified for the UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase.
For Mariam Mahmood, the campaign represents a major milestone as she becomes part of Wrexham’s first European journey and continues to raise Pakistan’s profile on the international football stage.
Abdullah Iqbal begins Champions League qualifying with Mjällby
Pakistan men’s team captain Abdullah Iqbal will also be involved in European competition as Mjällby AIF begin their UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign.
The Swedish club earned their first national league title and are now preparing for their European debut. They face Lincoln Red Imps in the second qualifying round, with the first leg scheduled for 22 July and the return fixture on 28 July.
The winners of the tie will progress to the third qualifying round, followed by the play-off round. Teams that successfully navigate the play-offs will secure a place in the Champions League league phase.
Teams eliminated during the Champions League qualifying rounds will continue their European campaigns in the UEFA Europa League, keeping their continental hopes alive.
A historic week for Pakistan football
With Mariam Mahmood competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and Abdullah Iqbal representing Mjällby in the men’s competition, Pakistan will have a presence across Europe’s top club tournaments.
