Pakistan is facing an escalating water security challenge as its storage capacity and per capita availability continue to decline sharply.

The country can now store water for only around 30 days, while comparable systems in countries such as India, Egypt and the United States maintain far larger reserves.

Pakistan’s water availability has dropped by 84% since 1947. What was once about 5,600 cubic meters per person has fallen to roughly 900 - placing the country firmly in the water-scarcity zone.

In Karachi, the situation is particularly severe, with the city operating at nearly half of its actual water requirement. Residents are increasingly relying on tanker supplies and depleted underground reserves to bridge the gap.
