Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari addressed a joint session of parliament on Monday, pledging to safeguard national sovereignty and intensify efforts against terrorism while honoring historical leaders.

Opposition members disrupted proceedings with protests and chants demanding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan throughout his speech.

The session, initiating the new parliamentary year, took place at Parliament House and was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, National Assembly members Aseefa Bhutto-Zardari, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, National Assembly Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, chiefs of the armed forces, diplomats, and other officials.

He vehemently condemned the attack on Iran and offered condolences for the martyrdom of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Zardari commenced his speech by attributing the unanimous constitution to martyred Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He further acknowledged slain former prime minister Benazir Bhutto's role in fortifying democracy through her sacrifices and leadership.

The president emphasized that national sovereignty protection entailed constitutional adherence and economic advancement.

He highlighted the imperative to improve citizens' welfare and maintain peace and stability. Zardari noted that Pakistan stands on the groundwork established by the pioneers of the national struggle.

Regarding security, he stated that Pakistan's armed forces provided a decisive retort to the Afghan Taliban. He remarked that the armed forces' sacrifices transcend numerical figures.

Referring to India, Zardari indicated that last year, Pakistan dismantled the image of a regional power in the battle for truth. "Pakistan is a responsible state," he declared, citing Article 51, which authorizes self-defense.

"We will not permit anyone to disrupt our peace," Zardari added. However, he affirmed Pakistan's consistent openness to dialogue.

Zardari stated that war remains the final recourse for Pakistan. He noted that the anti-terrorism campaign is not solely the Pakistan Army's burden. The whole nation supports its armed forces against terrorism, he added.

Zardari mentioned that the Taliban regime observed Pakistan's reaction upon crossing a red line. Amid unprovoked border attacks, Pakistan's forces exhibited professional skill and discipline, Zardari said.
