Pakistan may export an additional 600,000 metric tons of sugar if domestic production exceeds expectations, Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain said on Thursday.

He told reporters the government had permitted exports to help sugarcane growers secure better prices.

Will Pakistan allow more sugar exports?

Possibly, but it depends on output. Hussain said the government would consider exporting another 600,000 tons if production is better than expected.

The government has already permitted sugar exports, he said. Sugar mills are expected to begin the crushing season by mid-November.

“If sugar production is better than expected, we will also consider exporting another 600,000 tons,” he said.

What did Hussain say about wheat and farming?

On wheat, Hussain said imports had improved flour availability in the domestic market and helped bring down prices. He cited a statement by Sindh provincial minister Sharjeel Inam Memon acknowledging a decline in flour prices in the province.

Hussain also said corporate farming was gaining momentum, with private-sector investment expanding across various crops and contributing to environmental improvement.

What did Hussain say about the PML-Q and the Punjab government?

Turning to politics, Hussain described recent remarks by Chaudhry Salik Hussain as inappropriate and said they should not have been made. He said the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid was an ally of the ruling coalition and expressed confidence that differences would be resolved.

Praising Punjab’s provincial government, he said it was performing better than other provinces and commended Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her efforts.

He said his assessment was based on discussions held during meetings reviewing the performance of provincial governments.
