The Quetta Gladiators, the champions of the 2019 HBL PSL, are considered one of the strongest teams in this year's PSL 10.
They have bolstered their squad with top-notch players like New Zealand's Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, and Kyle Jamieson, Australian pacer Sean Abbott, and Sri Lanka’s highly experienced Kusal Mendis, all of whom have already arrived in Pakistan to prepare for the upcoming season.
The event is set to begin on Friday in Rawalpindi, with the opening match between Lahore Qalandars and defending champions Islamabad United.
West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein, known for his skill, will be paired with the talented local mystery bowler, Abrar Ahmed, as the conditions are likely to favor spinners.
The Gladiators' batting line-up is further strengthened by Rilee Rossouw, adding depth alongside the powerful New Zealanders at the top of the order. A notable excitement factor is the inclusion of the explosive young batsman Hasan Nawaz, who gained recognition after his match-winning century in the recent T20I series against New Zealand on their home turf.
Alongside their international talents, the Gladiators also boast a strong contingent of local players in both batting and bowling, and it will be intriguing to see how they perform during the tournament.
Head coach Moin Khan remains optimistic about his team’s chances for success this season.
“The team is looking very strong, and if the combination remains stable and injuries are avoided, I believe we will perform well and win the trophy this time,” Moin Khan told Nukta in an interview from Rawalpindi.
The Gladiators’ preparation included a training session on Wednesday in Rawalpindi ahead of their opening match against Peshawar Zalmi, scheduled for Saturday at the Pindi Stadium.
Moin emphasized the importance of gaining early momentum in the tournament.
"We need to build early momentum and sustain it throughout the competition. Losing momentum at any stage in T20 cricket can be detrimental. It’s essential to keep that momentum going, as one or two standout performances can really lift the team," he said.
He also expressed confidence in his players' abilities.
"Our players are capable of performing, and anyone who steps up and makes an impact will boost the team’s morale," Moin added.
He further pointed out that the team’s blend of experienced players and young talent would be crucial, provided the combination remains consistent from the outset.
Moin also expects the spinners to play a significant role, given the hot weather conditions this year, as this will be the first time the PSL is being held in April and May.
"In PSL 9, spinners were influential, and I think they will continue to make an impact this time. With the hot weather and dry pitches, spinners should get assistance, although it will depend on the conditions. Nowadays, most teams feature mystery spinners who can take wickets in T20 cricket," Moin said.
Furthermore, Moin believes that Hasan Nawaz could prove to be a game-changer.
"I hope he will perform well in the emerging category this PSL. His playing style suits the pitches, and he has the potential to turn a game on its head," Moin said.
However, he also stressed the importance of hard work and maturity for Nawaz’s development.
“Hasan is a promising talent, and although he faced challenges in New Zealand’s swinging conditions, he will improve over time. The key for him is to focus on excelling and work hard to enhance his skills,” he concluded.
