The cricketing world is abuzz as Pakistan gets ready to take on New Zealand in the tri-series final at the National Bank Stadium on Friday.
The highly anticipated clash will present both teams with an opportunity to secure the series title while also acting as a dress rehearsal for their impending encounter in the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled to kick off in Karachi just five days later.
While both teams have played some thrilling cricket in the lead-up to this decider, a win could provide a psychological edge ahead of the high-stakes ICC event.
Picking Momentum in time
While New Zealand has been the most consistent team in the tri-series by securing victories in both their matches, Pakistan will be confident to take revenge with their boosted morale after their record win against South Africa.
The hosts displayed historic batting prowess by successfully chasing down a formidable target of 353 runs set by South Africa, clinching victory by six wickets with an over to spare on Wednesday.
The victory marked Pakistan’s highest-ever successful run chase in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), courtesy the 260-run stand between Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha. The fourth-wicket partnership was Pakistan’s highest in the white-ball format.
Key players to watch
Mohammad Rizwan: The right-hander’s recent century against South Africa underscores his pivotal role in Pakistan's batting lineup.
Shaheen Shah Afridi: Renowned for his ability to secure early breakthroughs, Afridi's performance with the new ball will be crucial. He’s currently the leading wicket-taker in tri-series with five wickets along with Matt Henry.
Glenn Phillips: A dynamic batsman capable of shifting the game's momentum, Phillips has been instrumental in New Zealand's recent successes.
Mitchell Santner: As a versatile all-rounder, Santner's contributions with both bat and ball add depth to the Kiwi lineup.
Head to head
Historically, Pakistan holds a slight edge over New Zealand in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Out of 117 encounters, Pakistan has clinched victory 61 times, while New Zealand has won 52 matches. Three games concluded without a result, and one ended in a tie.
On the other hand, Pakistan has a decent track record in their recent 50-over matches against the Black Caps. Apart from the ongoing tri-series opening match, where New Zealand outclassed Pakistan, the Men in Green previously defeated the Kiwis in the 2023 World Cup league stage encounter, besides winning the 5-match series at home 4-1 in May 2023.
Form Guide
Pakistan entered the tri-nation series on the back of strong performances in their previous three ODI series against Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.
Under Mohammad Rizwan’s captaincy, they won 2-1 against Australia and Zimbabwe, and in December, they whitewashed South Africa 3-0 on their home turf.
New Zealand, meanwhile, defeated Sri Lanka 2-1 at home in January but lost 2-0 in Sri Lanka in November last year.
Pitch and Conditions
The tri-nation series final will be held at the newly upgraded National Bank Stadium in Karachi.
The venue saw a run-fest in the recent Pakistan-South Africa match, where over 700 runs were scored, as the home-team chased 353, their highest-ever ODI chase. The fast outfield provided full value for shots.
For the in-form New Zealand side, the surface will not only suit the batting of their mainstay Kane Williamson, who struck a brilliant ton against South Africa, but it will also be a free-flowing opportunity for batters like Will Young, Devon Conway, and Glenn Phillips to display their ultra-aggressive style of batting.
However, we can't underestimate Pakistan too; given the way they chased down a mammoth 353-run target in a high-pressure game.
The centuries from Mohammad Rizwan (122*) and Salman Ali Agha's 134 should be a massive boost for the hosts, considering how they approached the run-chase after the home team was in a spot of bother at 91-3.
With warm, sunny weather expected, the finale promises to be an exciting contest.
