A rocket struck on Saturday the residence of Mubarak Zeb Khan -- a member of Pakistan’s National Assembly and special assistant to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, marking the second such attack on his home in under a month, police said.

District Police Officer (DPO) Waqas Rafiq confirmed the incident to Nukta, stating that the rocket was fired around 1:15 a.m. local time in Bajaur district of the country’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

It hit the gate of a nearby house but also caused partial damage to the entrance of Khan’s residence.

Sharif condemned the attack and directed authorities to launch an immediate investigation and ensure the swift arrest of those responsible.

DPO Rafiq said police had initiated both an investigation and a search-and-strike operation in the area. “We have identified some suspects and will arrest and present them before the media soon,” he stated.

“This is not the first time Khan’s residence has been targeted,” Rafiq added, referring to a previous incident on May 14 when an improvised explosive device damaged the main gate of the house. “However, no injuries were reported in that incident either,” he said.

Khan denounced the attack as an act of terrorism, saying such cowardly tactics would not deter him. “I will continue to carry forward the vision of my martyred brother,” he vowed.

His brother, Rehan Zeb, was assassinated in a targeted attack on January 31, 2024 -- just a week before the general elections. Rehan had been contesting a National Assembly seat from the same constituency. Following his death, Mubarak Zeb ran in his place and won.

No major leads have yet emerged regarding Rehan Zeb’s killing.

The DPO ruled out any connection between the rocket attacks and Rehan Zeb's assassination, describing the latest incident as a terrorist act likely linked to extortion.

“We are actively pursuing the case and will soon expose all those involved,” he added.
