Pakistan has received its first-ever roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) shipment of electric vehicles, with more than 2,000 EVs arriving at Karachi Port aboard the vessel MV Grande Shanghai, marking a milestone for the country's maritime and automotive logistics, Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said.

The vessel berthed at the Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited (KGTML), making it the first RoRo carrier to deliver electric vehicles to Pakistan through the specialized shipping method, the minister said.

Unlike conventional cargo ships, RoRo vessels allow vehicles to be driven directly on and off the ship, reducing handling time, minimizing the risk of damage and improving operational efficiency.

Chaudhry said the arrival demonstrates Karachi Port's growing ability to handle modern shipping services that meet international standards and supports efforts to modernize Pakistan's port operations.

He said the development would strengthen Pakistan's trade and logistics infrastructure, improve the country's competitiveness in maritime commerce and support the adoption of advanced port facilities.

The minister said Karachi Port is steadily advancing toward world-class shipping and cargo handling services, adding that the introduction of RoRo operations is expected to improve efficiency and facilitate future vehicle imports through modern maritime transport.
